String Check

While some clinicians routinely perform string checks, it may not always be necessary. A string check should be performed when there is a concern, and within 12 weeks of placement.

Counselling Women on how to perform a string self-check

  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Sit or squat.
  3. Insert your index or middle finger into your vagina until you touch the cervix (it should feel firm and somewhat rubbery... like the tip of your nose).
  4. Feel for the thread ends that should be coming through your cervix (strings feel like fishing line or plastic).

If you feel the IUC threads, then your IUD is in place and working. If you don’t feel the threads, see your doctor to ensure your IUC is in place.
