Menstrual Changes

Menstrual Changes with LNG-IUS

Most women experience decreased menstrual blood loss, with a significant number experiencing amenorrhea, which is safe.

Menstrual Changes with Cu-IUD

  • An increase in the quantity and duration of menstrual blood loss is normal with the use of a copper IUD. Clinically, an extra 0.5 to 1 day of flow is common, and up to 2 days is considered normal.
  • Women with dysmenorrhea may experience worsening symptoms. Data is conflicting as to whether or not bleeding and pain decrease over time.
