Additional Tests

Swabs: Same-day swabs, based on risk factors, is safe and cost-effective

"If there is evidence of mucopurulent discharge or pelvic tenderness, IUC insertion should be delayed until the swab results are known and the woman is treated.” - SOGC

Cervical Screening: Should take place based on provincial guidelines, whether or not an IUD is in place.

Pregnancy Test: Pregnancy testing is indicated if one cannot be certain a woman is unlikely to be pregnant at time of IUC placement

Physical Exam: A limited exam is sufficient to confirm uterine position and exclude obvious uterine abnormalities (e.g. fibroids)

“Bimanual examination and cervical inspection should be performed to assess uterine position and size as well as any uterine or cervical abnormalities that might preclude IUC use.” - SOGC
